Jobs at Concrete Playground

Purpose for this role

We're looking for a talented writer and editor to steer the day-to-day direction of organic content on Concrete Playground Auckland and Wellington, and to help build our brand presence and footprint in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Editor will have great instincts for finding the strongest possible angle and most engaging headline, and will deftly deliver news stories, writing and sharing them in a timely manner so they have maximum impact when they find our audience.

Desired outcomes

Reporting to the Editorial Director, you'll steer Concrete Playground's editorial output in New Zealand. This involves:

  • Writing and editing fresh, relevant, informative and audience-first digital content, and publishing this to our website, social media and e-newsletter channels.
  • Fastidious sub-editing of all content, making images, text, video and links work together as a happy whole.
  • Maintaining a network of contacts that you can tap into to stay on top of the latest in what's happening in Auckland, Wellington and beyond.
  • Juggling news with multiple competing deadlines so all content is delivered in a timely fashion to our readers.
  • Dreaming up new feature ideas, commissioning editorial and photography work and building up Concrete Playground's talent pool as needed.

Competencies

  • Technical competencies: Experience working with WordPress, SEO and analytics tools. Advanced knowledge of social media platforms and best practices. A highly proficient sub-editor with a good visual eye.
  • Professional competencies: A creative and strategic self-starter, you're highly organised and comfortable working remotely (joining regular newsroom meetings with our Sydney-based Australian editorial team).
  • Cultural competencies: As someone who closely follows the news and inherently understands the cultural landscape of cities, you're passionate about the things we're passionate about: food, drink, arts, culture, technology, travel, lifestyle and urban affairs.

Sound like you?

If you think that you're the right fit for the role and you've had 3+ years experience working as an editor in digital media, we would love to hear from you. Please send your application to Concrete Playground's General Manager via [email protected], along with the following:

  • A cover letter
  • Your CV/resume.
  • Links to (or PDFs of) three samples of your work.
  • A brief paragraph explaining how you would drive forward Concrete Playground's editorial agenda in New Zealand.

Purpose for this role

The Branded Content Manager's role is to develop and deliver the best-in-class editorial and content product for our partners; artfully bridging the gap between creating compelling content that our audience want to read, and delivering a commercial message in a way that's authentic and adds value to our audience.

This role covers every part of the process - from developing and pitching concepts and big ideas; to writing, editing, and overseeing the final execution of branded content. Ultimately, the purpose is to deliver content that is as good, if not better, than our day-to-day editorial output for our partners and for our audience.

Desired outcomes

Reporting to the Editorial Director, you'll steer Concrete Playground's editorial output in New Zealand. This involves:

  • Deliver compelling and creative concepts and content that will guarantee strong engagement from our audience.
  • Ensure all work is of the highest quality and has been fastidiously fact-checked and sub-edited.
  • Work closely with our Client Services team to coordinate the roll-out of branded assets, adapting the content into the best format for each platform or medium.
  • Manage external parties to deliver the best work within the budget, including commissioning contributors, content creators, photographers and video teams.
  • Help consistently exceed our campaign KPIs in terms of views and engagements, by creating content that performs above our standard editorial benchmarks.

Competencies

  • Technical competencies: 3+ years experience in writing and editing, experience in working with clients to develop branded content, strong command of tone of voice, highly proficient in sub-editing and fact-checking, literate with relevant tech platforms (WordPress, Google Suite, Asana etc).
  • Cultural competencies: A natural communicator and collaborator, you're passionate about what you do. You own it: accountability is important to you. You're creative: you love the excitement of and the business of ideas.
  • Most importantly, you're passionate about the things that we are passionate about: cultural events, food and drink, travel, art and design.
